JOCKEY Fernando “Dhunoy” Raquel cracked the whip with precision in the final stretch to steer Boss Emong past Sky Shot and the rest of the pack to win the Philippine Racing Commission (Philracom) Chairman’s Cup on Sunday at the Metro Manila Turf Club in Malvar, Batangas.

Boss Emong also had to stave off a ferocious chase by Super Swerte approaching the line to rule the 1,800-meter race.

The grey galloper owned by Edward Vincent Diokno grabbed victory by a head for the champion’s purse of P1.2 million in the race held in honor of the late Philracom Chairman Andrew Sanchez.

Super Swerte, the pre-race favorite, took second-place honors and the P400,000 prize, followed by Pangalusian Island (P200,000).

“I’m very pleased with the way Boss Emong performed to win this one. But I tell you, you have not yet seen the best of my horse,’’ Diokno said.

It was a well-timed move by Raquel with three-eight of a mile left in the race after Sky Shot led a blistering pace off the gates.

Heneral Kalentong settled for fourth place worth P100,000 while Shanghai Grey (P60,000) and Son Also Rises (P40,000) arrived fifth and sixth, respectively.

Miren Sanchez received a plaque of recognition in honor of his late father Sanchez.

“I’m very honored and happy for this plaque of recognition as well as my mom and my siblings. The races continue to be exciting. Thank you Philracom,” Miren Sanchez said.
