Bacolod City – As the holiday season approaches, PBrig. Gen. Jack Wanky, regional police director of Western Visayas, ordered police commanders to maximize security operations to ensure public safety, as the tradition of the nine day Simbang Gabi starts December 16.

This is to ensure the prevention of crimes, and securing the safety of mall goers, travelers, commuters, and tourists, Wanky said.

Expecting an influx of people and tourists in the different areas of Western Visayas, he also directed police chiefs to engage different stakeholders, such as local government units, barangay officials, force multipliers, and other government and non-government organizations, deployment of personnel and crime prevention programs.

Wanky also reminded police commanders that police personnel should be well-briefed before the actual deployment, and to ensure that all crime prevention and solution efforts are monitored and closely supervised.

In a statement, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil also ordered and intensified security operations to ensure public safety, prevent criminal activities, and address political security challenges arising from the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Christmas is a season of joy and giving, but it is also a period when criminal elements may exploit public vulnerability,” Marbil said.

With a surge in online transactions during the season, Marbil also urged the public to remain vigilant by verifying transactions and avoiding suspicious links. “Our operations target the syndicates behind these scams, but the public’s awareness and caution are crucial in preventing victimization,” he said.

The PNP is also preparing for potential political activities, including announced prayer rallies by the Iglesia Ni Cristo in support of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s position on the impeachment case and possible demonstrations by proponents of the case.

“Our mandate is clear: to ensure public safety under any circumstances. The PNP is a professional and apolitical organization. We are here to serve and protect all Filipinos, regardless of the political climate,” the PNP Chief emphasized. (Gilbert Bayoran via The Visayan Daily Star)
