BACOLOD CITY – The City Government of Bacolod has released PHP 5,616,000 in financial assistance to 936 solo parents under its Solo Parents’ Welfare Program, which aims to strengthen support systems and improve the quality of life of single-parent families.
The Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD) facilitated the distribution at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) lobby last week, with each beneficiary receiving PHP 6,000.
The aid provides PHP 1,000 per month for the first half of 2025, covering January to June.
DSSD head Dr. Richelle Verdeprado said this is the first batch of beneficiaries for the year, while 564 additional solo parents are undergoing validation for the next round of assistance.
The city has allocated PHP 18 million for the program in 2025 and conducts an annual re-evaluation to ensure that only eligible recipients benefit from the program.
DSSD social workers distribute assistance both in barangays and directly at the DSSD office, stressing the need for continuous coordination with barangay social workers to guarantee proper identification, assessment, and guidance of solo parents.
In March, the DSSD also released PHP 12,000 each to 521 solo parents as part of last year’s program cycle.
Verdeprado reaffirmed the city’s commitment to upholding Republic Act 11861, or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, which strengthens government support for solo parents nationwide.
“More than assistance, we are building an empowered, supportive community where solo parents can thrive and feel that they are not alone,” she said.
Meanwhile, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) head Jovelyn Canoy announced that 15 solo parents with first-year college students enrolled in private schools were included in the PESO Scholarship Program.
Each scholar will receive PHP 10,000 in tuition assistance, paid directly to their respective schools, and a PHP 3,000 allowance.
The Solo Parents’ Welfare Program is aligned with the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) national initiative recognizing the vital role of solo parents who raise children on their own.
Under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, qualified beneficiaries are entitled to financial aid, educational assistance, and access to social protection and livelihood. (Glazyl Jopson via tdg)
