Davao City – The implementation of the intensified case-finding through surveillance swabbing from March 31 to April 26 yielded a positivity rate of 1.3 per cent positivity rate or 72 of the 5,582 swabbed individuals for Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes the coronavirus disease.

Although the 1.3 per cent rate is low, Dr. Ashley Lopez, the Acting City Health Officer and Covid-19 Task Force focal person, said is still significant because the individuals positive of the Sars-CoV-2 can still be the source of transmission.

“Kaning 72, although that is only 1.3 percent that is an acceptable rate. That indicates na mubo ra ta’g kaso. Pero maski usa ra na that is significant sa atong tan aw. Makatakod gihapon ni maski usa lang ni, how much more kanang 72,” he said.

Lopez stressed the importance of surveillance swabbing in detecting the asymptomatic Covid-19 cases in the city as a key to stop potential transmission in the communities.

“Dako gyud ang impact aning atong ginabuhat na surveillance swabbing because kung wala ni, wala ta kabalo asa na ning 72 kabuok na positive. Mao ni possible nga source na modaghan na pud atong kaso nga wala ta kabalo,” he said.

Thus, Lopez said the city government must be more aggressive case finding through surveillance swabbing because even one case can potentially spread the deadly virus.  Lopez said that the CHO has scheduled more surveillance swabbing in certain areas almost daily.

On April 26, the city government kicked off surveillance testing of public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, courier service, and food delivery drivers. This is available from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM from Monday to Saturday until May 8 at the Crocodile Park.

On April 27, CHO teams conducted swabbing in Brgy. 76-A Bucana where 254 individuals were swabbed and in Brgy. 19-B which was consistently at the Top 5 High-Risk barangays in the city. Some 95 individuals were swabbed in the area.

On April 30, the team is set to conduct random swabbing in NCCC mall in Cabantian, Buhangin District, and in three branches of Lots for Less malls in Lanang, Ma-a, and Monteverde.  Lopez said CHO is planning to conduct the surveillance RT-PCR testing at the Sasa Wharf for travelers, market vendors and laborers next week.

Also, the team will conduct swabbing for the vendors in Matina Aplaya, Catalunan Grande where cases are increasing, and in Catalunan Pequeno. CHO is also targeting tricycle drivers and ‘talipapa’ vendors.  Surveillance swabbing is set to be conducted in Tacunan Market, banks, and some government offices. Lopez said that among the workplaces, banks are one of the places that always have are Covid-19 cases. (City Information Office | Michael Manguhig, RPN DXKT Davao OIC)
