Strong Winds, Rains Down 58 Houses In Bago City

A total of 58 houses in four villages in Bago City, Negros Occidental were downed by strong winds and rains in separate incidents on Tuesday and Thursday, reports of the city disaster risk reduction and management office (CDRRMO) said.

At least 147 individuals were displaced – 110 in Barangay Malingin and 37 in Barangay Atipuluan. Four persons sustained minor injuries.

Dr. Merijene Ortizo, head of Bago City’s DRRMO, said on Thursday night the affected families have been provided food assistance by the city social welfare and development office.

At about noon on Thursday, 40 houses in two villages were affected. These included 22 partially damaged and seven totally damaged structures in Barangay Malingin.

In Barangay Atipuluan, nine houses were partially damaged while two were totally damaged.

On Tuesday afternoon, some 18 houses in the villages of Atipuluan, Abuanan, and Ma-ao were also damaged by strong winds.

“We will also facilitate the assistance of PHP10,000 each for families with totally damaged houses and PHP5,000 each for those whose houses were partially damaged,” Ortizo said.

On Thursday, heavy rains with strong winds started at about noon and lasted for an hour, sweeping homes and toppling some trees and plants in the two villages.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division, the heavy rains with strong winds were caused by the easterlies affecting the Visayas, Palawan, and Mindanao. (Erwin Nicavera pna)
