Davao City:  The Department of Agriculture (DA) 11 is now hastening the implementation of the modernization of rice farming in the region, a year after the implementation of Republic Act 11203, the Rice Tariffication Law (RTL).

This was barred by DA 11 Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section head Noel Provido in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon.

Provido said their office was in the process of procurement as they are evaluating the machines that will be used for the mechanization.

“The Rice Tarrification Law will now focus in mechanization because with more agricultural equipment, we will attain efficient and fast rice farming”. He said

Department of Agriculture 11 is now also identifying rice farmers associations in the region which will benefit from the equipment that will be produced by their office.

Provido said the mechanization will make the country’s rice product competitive in the Philippine market just like Thailand and Vietnam which have cheaper price compared to the farmers here.

He said explaining that farmers in these countries could still derive income despite their cheaper price of rice because they have lower production costs- 6 pesos to 8 pesos per kilo compared to 12 pesos in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Provido said RTL gave advantage to the consumers since the people can now buy rice in the market at a cheaper price.

“ The consumers can now buy rice for as low as 36 pesos per kilo in the market compared before that the price was High”. He said.
