Preparations In Place In W. Visayas For ‘Auring’ Landfall

Preparations for the landfall of tropical storm Auring in Western Visayas are already in place, said the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) here on Friday.

OCD regional director Jose Roberto Nuñez, also the chair of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC), said that during their pre-disaster risk assessment (PDRA) on Thursday, they already conducted an inventory of all available equipment and resources.

Areas that are susceptible to flooding and landslide have been advised to “closely monitor” the hazards.

“We have to think proactively. Its track is like ‘Yolanda’, all the way down from Mindanao to Leyte side. It is very slow at 75 (kilometers per hour) but its radius is wide,” he said in a phone interview.

He added that local government units (LGUs), with limited resources, should already have identified their evacuation centers and ready with their food preparations.

“They should always follow the alert system of PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Service Administration) and they should look closely at perspectives of the landslide-prone areas released by the MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau),” Nuñez said.

Based on the weather advisory, the typhoon will pass through the eastern part of the region, hitting Antique.

The MGB on its list based on rainfall data on Thursday identified 90 barangays in the region as susceptible to flooding and landslide. These are composed of 26 barangays in Aklan, six in Antique, 58 in Iloilo.

Based on the inventory of non-food items at the OCD warehouse, there are 16 chainsaws, 1,194 units of shelter repair kits, 3, 959 pieces of blankets, 81 rolls of sakoline (tarpaulins being used as temporary roof cover), 765 pieces of malong (tube skirts), 210 pieces of raingear, 118 megaphones and 6,636 boxes of hygiene kits.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has 19, 556 family food packs (FFPs) available at its regional warehouse and 18, 299 prepositioned packs.

For non-food items, it has 621 hygiene kits, 418 sleeping kits, 1,045 blankets, 1,757 pieces of plastic mats, and 1,333 pieces of malong available at its regional warehouse.

The Department of Health Western Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH WV CHD) has prepositioned PHP492,956.09 worth of assorted medical supplies, drugs, and medicines, hygiene kits, collapsible drinking water container, first aid kits, and family kits.
