OCVet: Poultry Shippers Need Permit Prior To Shipping Fowls To Zambo

The Office of the City Veterinarian (OCVet) advises all shippers of poultry to obtain a permit prior to shipping their fowls into Zamboanga City.

This requirement, according to City Veterinarian Mario Arriola, is in response to the recent confirmation by the Department of Agriculture (DA) of avian influenza (AI) and other poultry-related diseases such as Newcastle Disease (ND).

The office in coordination with the DA-Bureau of Animal Industry (Veterinary Quarantine Services – IX) has been conducting regular intervention measures specifically to prevent the entry/spread of such diseases in the city.

In a recent advisory issued by OCVet, shippers of poultry are required to subject their animals for inspection and present their Certificate of ND Vaccination issued by a licensed veterinarian to obtain a Veterinary Shipping Permit from the Veterinary Quarantine Services.

According to the World Organization for Animal Health, Newcastle Disease is a highly contagious and often severe viral ailment found worldwide that affects birds including domestic poultry. It usually presents as a respiratory disease, but depression, nervous manifestations, or diarrhea may be the predominant clinical form.

ND is transmitted most often by direct contact with diseased or carrier birds. It is very contagious, infecting virtually all the birds in a susceptible flock within two to six days. It can also be a public health risk as it can infect humans, causing conjunctivitis although the condition is generally very mild and self-limiting.  (LGU – Provincial Information Office)
