Iriga: DENR BICOL LEADS BAMBOO GROWING FOR PHILIPPINE BAMBOO MONTH 2024

In celebration of Philippine Bamboo Month, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Bicol spearheaded a Bamboo growing activity, today, September 18, 2024 at the Modernized and Mechanized Forest Nursery (MMFN) in Banao, Guinobatan, Albay.

The activity was participated in by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) V headed by Regional Director (RD) Dindo G. Gabol represented by Senior Trade Industry Development Specialist (STIDS) Meiden O. Mujar, United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Daraga – CagsawaChapter headed by Arch. Ma. Arlette S. Manzanades, TulongPanghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) beneficiaries and DENR Bicol regional office, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) Albay and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Guinobatan personnel.

In her message, Albay OIC, PENR Officer Narisol C. Divina emphasized the significance of the activity. “We want to show the people that bamboo is a forest product that should be appreciated. Its strong roots help hold the soil, preventing erosion and contributing to the stability of our landscapes,”she said.

Meanwhile, DENR Bicol ARD for Special Concerns Adona P. San Diego representing Regional Executive Director (RED) Francisco E. Milla Jr. highlighted the economic and environmental potential of Bamboo, referring to it as “the green gold of the forest.” “Bamboo, like the Filipino, is pliant and resilient. It holds the power to provide environmental stability, ensure economic opportunities, that will benefit future generations.” ARD Adona said.

ARD San Diego also shared to the participants Maritime Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANA Mo), also being observed this September. MANA Mo aims to strengthen public awareness on the maritime wealth found in the country’s archipelagic waters and territorial sea.

Furthermore, DTI V STIDS Meiden O. Mujaremphasized that bamboo has the potential to combat climate change while also creating livelihood opportunities. “Bamboo has the power to uplift communities, promote sustainable industries, and offer eco-friendly solutions,” she stated.

DENR Bicol Conservation and Development Division (CDD) Chief Marlene M. Francia urged everyone to support the region’s greening programs, emphasizing that collective participation is key to restoring forests and building climate resilience.

Bamboo, known for its rapid growth and adaptability, has found its place as a cornerstone in the Philippines’ quest for ecological balance, economic empowerment, and environmental protection. Beyond its role in soil conservation and carbon sequestration, bamboo offers livelihood opportunities, sustainable construction materials, and even solutions to erosion control.

“Bamboo embodies the spirit of resilience and sustainability. Just as it withstands adversity, we too can overcome challenges by nurturing our environment and supporting sustainable practices,” RED Milla said. Source: DENR Bicol
