Close to 2,000 barangay health workers and nutrition scholars in Benguet Province can now avail of free checkup which started June 14 at the Benguet General Hospital.

The free check-up, spearheaded by Benguet legislative caretaker and ACT – CIS Partylist representative Eric Go Yap is targeting 1,620 recipients that will include complete blood count (CBC), urinalysis, electrocardiogram (ECG), chest X-ray PA view, whole abdominal ultrasound, fasting blood sugar (FBS), total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL, blood uric acid (BUA), creatinine, alanine transaminase (ALT), anti HBs quantitative, breast ultrasound (for women) and prostate specific antigen (for men).

“Health is a fundamental right of the people, ayaw natin na yung mismong mga health workers natin ang walang access to healthcare na kailangan nila. Baka mamaya may lingering illness na pala or may dinaramdam na pero hindi makapagpacheck up kasi nanghinihayang sa pambayad. Kaya kailangan natin bigyan ng libreng medical check – up,” Yap said.

Yap added other sectors in the province will be scheduled next and will be announced thru the Facebook page “Benguet Congressional District Office – Cong Eric Yap.”

“This is a holistic approach to healthcare delivery, hindi pwedeng shotgun approach na basta lang may programa. If they need medical treatment, we’ll have it covered as well. We can’t just say na ‘Ok na yan’. Kailangan balance lahat kaya we are not focusing only sa livelihood, scholarships, other social services, kailangan pagtuunan din ng pansin yung kalusugan ng mismong mga nagpapahatid nito. Marami pang kasunod ito,” Yap added.

The solon said he will also look at improving the economic condition of barangay health and nutrition workers in the province.

“Our BHWs and BNS are unsung and unpaid, ang liit ng incentive na nakukuha nila because of the financial resources ng barangays nila. Tinitignan natin ang long term solution on this, we will push for the amendment of Local Government Code to professionalize the operations of the barangays at magkaroon ng regular salaries. We have filed this already and gusto natin sana mapalawak pa yung coverage to all barangay workers,” Yap pointed out.

The free check up will done by batch and those living in far flung areas will be shuttled for free by the Office of the Congressman.
