DOLE officially exempts UK from PHL deployment cap on nurses

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has finally exempted the United Kingdom from the deployment quota for Filipino health care workers (HCW). 

Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III they already approved the request  of the British government to be allowed hire over the 5,000 per year cap for HCWs. 

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) implemented the cap earlier this year ensure the country will have a sufficient pool of HCWs for the government’s Covid-19 response. 

“As fare as the United Kingdom is concerned, we approved their request to be exempted,” Bello said in a television interview on Monday evening.

He said they expect the UK will employ 2,000 to 3,000 Filipino HCWs per month. 
Bello’s pronouncement came after POEA announced last month the the government will first wait for the signing of a new bilateral agreement with the British government before considering the said exemption.

Under the proposed accord, Filipinos will be deployed to UK under a government-to-government arrangement. 

Currently, Filipino HCWs are deployed through private recruitment agencies.
