The Department of the Interior and Local Government in Western Visayas (DILG-6) is keeping an eye on the compliance of local government units (LGUs) with the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to reclaim public roads.

Ariel Iglesia, DILG 6 regional director, said he called on the LGUs to start heeding the call of the President.

Local chief executives are all aware of the instructions and expected to readily take steps to address the matter, he said in an interview.

“It was reiterated during the dialogue with governor, city and municipal mayors in Manila Hotel recently,” he said.

President Duterte made the directive for the LGUs “to undertake immediate action to ensure the speedy and smooth flow of vehicular traffic” by reclaiming all public roads being used for “private ends” during his State of the Nation Address on July 22.

The same directive was also echoed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Roy Cimatu, the Cabinet officer for Western Visayas regional development and security, during the orientation-workshop of local government officials on environmental laws in Iloilo City.

Iglesia said LGUs are all aware of the instructions. “So I know that by now, they will start doing actions regarding that. We encouraged all local government units through the municipal and city mayors to pass ordinances on clearing our roads being used for private purposes,” he said.

He added that LGUs must comply with the instruction up to the end of September this year, as announced by the national office.* (Gail Momblan via NDB)
