Davao City:  An official of the Public Safety and Security Command Center in Davao City revealed that their agency orchestrates the police, military and civilian security units in the city for peace and security in both normal situations and during this time of pandemic.

Angel Sumagaysay, chief of the Public Safety and Security Command Center of Davao City stressed they make sure that all members of the security sector are working together to guarantee that all policies of government particularly on peace and security are implemented in the communities.

Speaking in the Public Briefing#LagingHandaPH, he said that there are communities that are on lockdown to ensure that the COVID-19 infection is controlled.

“Lockdowns are done in coordination with City Health Office and the barangay governments,” he said.

Sumagaysay said the PSSCC guards the city-owned establishments as they warn other members of the security sector of the impending danger, especially in the areas of the city that are monitored all the time because of the presence of closed-circuit-television cameras.

He asserted that if the city will again be placed under the General Community Quarantine (GCQ) classification due to the continued increase of COVID-cases, the security sector will provide support to the city government.

As of press time, Davao City observes the modified general community quarantine.

Sumagaysay said from March 15 to the present, about 4,219 apprehensions on curfew, social distancing, mask and food and medicine pass had been done both by the police and military in their efforts to instill discipline on the residents  amid the pandemic.

“Legal cases were filed against violators through regular filing based on the guidance of the Justice Department,” he explained.

Sumagaysay pointed out that the wearing of face masks and social distancing are strongly implemented in the city especially that the former already has the penal clause, based on the ordinance passed recently by the 19th City Council.

Residents who fail to wear face masks in public places will now be penalized as the 19th Davao City Council passed an ordinance for the mandatory wearing of face masks at all times in public places during the community quarantine or until the state of public health emergency is lifted.

Under the ordinance, violators will be fined P500 for the first offense, P2,000 for the second offense, and P5,000 fine or one-month imprisonment or both for the third offense.

He assumed that the fight against COVID-19 is a fight of all sectors in government which needs the cooperation of the people.  (PIA XI-Joey Sem G. Dalumpines)
