Catholic faithful in Iriga City trekked to Inorogan Shrine of Our Lady of Nuestra Señora de las Angustias this morning in remembrance of the sacrifices of Jesus Christ during this Lenten season.

It was a simultaneous activity of different vicariates and parishes in the city, including Parroquia y Santuario Archidiosano de San Antonio de Padua, Our Lady of Salvation Parish, St. Jude Thaddeus Parish, St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Nuestra Señora de las Angustias Parish, and Our Lady of Fatima Parish, in observance of the Lenten Season.

After the Penitential Walk it was followed by concelebrated mass celebrated by Rev Msgr. Francisco Monge of Sorsogon Vicariate who is also from Iriga City.

In his homily Fr. Monge drew inspiration from the Gospel of Luke (Luke 5:27-32), where Jesus calls Levi, a tax collector, to follow him, prompting criticism from the Pharisees for dining with sinners. This symbolizes Jesus willingness to engage with those marginalized such as tax collectors and sinners because our Church is not a church of Saints but of Sinners. Jesus welcome everyone regardless of their perceived shortcomings and sins.

He also mentioned that our journey is parallel to the journey of repentance undertaken by the faithful during the Penitential Walk. Participants were encouraged to reflect on their own spiritual journeys, recognizing the presence of both smooth paths and rough terrain. He also underscored the significance of “Ina” or mother, in accompanying believers on their spiritual journey. “As Ina walked alongside Jesus in his earthly ministry, she continues to walk with us, offering solace, guidance, and intercession.

Mayor Rex and Vice Edsel were both present during the activity and they thanked Rev Msgr Monge for such poignant and touching message during his homily.

The City Government’s participation in the Penitential Walk demonstrates its vision to become a hub for faith-based tourism in the region, and we hope that this will inspire more people to explore their spirituality.
