Bacolod City – Almost three weeks after the phreatic eruption of Kanlaon volcano on June 3, the majority of the affected La Castellana residents have returned to their respective homes.

Mayor Alme Rhummyla Nicor Mangilimutan, recently disclosed that there are only 51 families left behind at evacuation centers.

Those families are residing within the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone of Kanlaon volcano, Mangilimutan said.

More than 4,000 La Castellana residents evacuated from their homes, following the eruption of Kanlaon volcano.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has recommended that nobody should be allowed to reside within the permanent danger zone. The mayor said that it needs political will to make those people understand.

As of June 23, PHIVOLCS logged three volcanic quakes at Kanlaon volcano, which remains on Alert Level 2 status.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development reported that it provided more P26 million worth of assistance to displaced families in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental who were affected by the Mt. Kanlaon eruption. (Gilbert Bayoran via The Visayan Daily Star)
