The provincial government of Negros Occidental will lead stakeholders in the forthcoming agricultural summit on January 31.

Provincial Agriculturist Atty. Japhet Masculino said the summit aims to collate the concerns of the different stakeholders.

“We want to ask them what Negros can offer other agriculture products aside from sugar,” Masculino said.

The summit comes on the heels of concerns by leaders of the sugar industry over pronouncements that the importation of sugar will be liberalized.

About 300,000 sugar and mill workers would be out of job, including small and medium sugarcane growers, the General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) said.

People who are dependent on sugar alone would be forced to sell or abandon their lands in Negros Occidental if sugar import liberalization pushes through, according to GAWA Secretary General Wennie Sancho.

The summit will have the theme, “Redefining the Negros Rural Landscape: Negros 1st Transformative Agricultural Summit.(Prov’l PIO via NDB)”*
