A Surigaonon from Brgy. Cansayong, Malimono, Surigao del Norte shared her expertise to the discovery of SAMBA II SARS-CoV-2.
Dr. Lourdes M. Nadala, a Filipina microbiologist-virologist, was part of the team that developed SAMBA II SARS-CoV-2 Test kit in the Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. The SAMBA II is a fully automated molecular test that determines if the patient has SARS-CoV-2 in less than 90 minutes. It allows detection of the virus before the onset of COVID-19 symptoms; for instance, in patients who are asymptomatic.
Dr. Nadala, who obtained her Ph.D. in Microbiology (major in Animal Virology) from the University of Hawaii, and her MS in Microbiology and BS in Biology form the University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB), led the quality and regulatory planning of the project which guided the team in meeting the required testing for performance verification and validation.
