Davao Oriental  –  Twenty-six (26) former members of the Communist New People’s Army have recently received ₱ 6,000 financial assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office (DSWD).

The said cash aid is intended for the former rebels’ personal needs such as toiletries, clothes, and other items they will use while undergoing processing at the Happy Home — a halfway house for former rebels.

While all of the 26 former rebels received the ₱ 6,000 cash, two of them have received an additional livelihood support of ₱ 20,000 each as both of them have now worked alongside the government – one designated as the Former Rebel Development Officer (FRDO) and the other as a Citizens Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) trainee.

“Some of them, Former Rebels (FRs), came here without any personal belongings. Others might not even have undergarments. This small assistance could somehow aid them in providing their personal needs and help their families while they are here at the facility,” DSWD’s Regional Director Raquel Nunez, who personally overseen the distribution.

“Dako kayo ug tabang. Pagbalik namo, wala mi nabiyaan sa among pamilya, pero tungod sa assistance na gihatag sa gobyerno, naa mi matunol sa ilaha mintras naa mi diri,” a former rebel stated, adding that he is grateful for the opportunity given to them to start over with their new life and not anymore hiding, running, or risking their lives.

Apart from the financial assistance, the former rebels will also undergo livelihood trainings and scores of other interventions to help them be prepared for reintegration to the mainstream society.

The distribution was also spearheaded by the 701st Brigade and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office. Two weeks ago, the previous batch of former rebels also received financial assistance of ₱ 20,000 from the DSWD.

The distribution took place at Happy Home, Magay, Don Martin Marundan on October 23, 2020. (Shaye Dacles | OIC Michael Manguhig RPN DXKT Davao)
