The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) closed down the five branches of “Peryahan ng Bayan” in Negros Occidental on Sunday over allegations of illegal gambling.

Atty. Renoir Baldovino, NBI-Bacolod chief, said the operations were conducted after a search warrant was issued against the “Peryahan ng Bayan” branches in Murcia, E.B. Magalona, Hinigaran, Himamaylan City, and Victorias City.

A total of 36 collectors and staff were arrested during the operations.

Baldovino said that in 2014 the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) issued a deed of authority to a company in order for them to operate “Peryahan” games in the province.

However, the deed of authority expired in 2016, and the “Peryahan ng Bayan” allegedly continued to operate without renewing with the PCSO, Baldovino said.

The 36 arrested individuals are facing charges of violating Republic Act 9287 or the Act to Increase Penalties Against Illegal Numbers Game.* (NDB)
