The completion of the Kabankalan City Airport project and the conversion of local road linking Magballo in Kabankalan and Pinggot in Ilog into a national road to improve it, are just among projects eyed by incoming 6th District Congressman Genaro “Lim-ao” Alvarez.

This was revealed by Alvarez himself during Wednesday afternoon’s interview with Negros Daily Bulletin (NDB) and TDG at his office in the premier city of southern Negros Occidental.

Alvarez said as soon as he assumes his post next week, he will focus on the completion of the domestic airport in the city and make it operational possibly by next year even just to initially accommodate propeller-driven aircrafts.

Alvarez succeeded his daughter, Congresswoman Mercedes “Cheding” Alvarez who completed her three terms as representative of the district that covers the CHICKS area composed of the towns of Candoni, Hinoba-an, Ilog, Cauayan, and the cities of Kabankalan and Sipalay.

Cheding Alvarez is the first
Negros solon to become Deputy Speaker of the House.

Incoming Cong. Lim-ao during the exclusive interview with NDB and TDG said that the airport project is a dream he would have pursued years ago if he could have won when he ran for governor in 2013 against now outgoing Governor Alfredo Marañon.

He said it was the first time he lost in his 30-year political career.

“I am back, so I can pursue it again (after a hiatus of six years in politics)”, he said.

He said that as far as the 6th district is concerned “practically all the roads have been concreted”, citing the nine years that his daughter was congresswoman of the district, which he started when he was also congressman before her.

He said continuing programs he started and carried on by her daughter include the “Womb to Tomb” services for the people of the district as well as scholarships for the less privileged students in the six localities in the district.

“So it is really high time that we will have a domestic airport here,” Lim-ao said. He was a commercial pilot before he joined politics.

He said that once Kabankalan has an operational airport, the city and other areas will progress rapidly, and business and tourism destinations in southern Negros will benefit especially the people.

He said the provincial government has poured in P40 million for development of the runway, the City of Kabankalan has also allocated P40 million, and in two months he will also allocate P50 milion for the development of the runway which is 1.2 kilometers.

Before the end of this year we hope to finish the runway, he said.

He added that he will personally follow up with CAAP and other agencies to fast track the commencement of airport operations once it is completed.(NDB)

ROAD IMPROVEMENT.

In the same interview, Cong. Lim-ao Alvarez showed a copy of his proposed house bill that seeks to convert into a national road the the local road stretching from Barangay Magballo in Kabankalan to Brgy. Pinggot in Ilog town.

He said the meager funds of the Kabankalan and Ilog LGUs have been unable to repair and maintain the road, so that converting this into a national road “will ensure the allocation of annual funding for the road’s repair, maintenance and improvement”.

He said it will then “allow agriculture, tourism, trade and commerce to flow unhampered, create an environment of vibrant economic activity and contribute to development and poverty reduction efforts.”* (Arman P. Toga, NDB)
