Iriga: DOH Bicol CHD holds groundbreaking ceremony of BSL-SNRL; inaugurates BRGHGMC facilities


The Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD) held the groundbreaking ceremony of the Bicol South Luzon – Sub National Reference Laboratory (BSL-SNRL) and inaugurated the enhanced facilities of the Bicol Region General Hospital and Geriatric Center (BRGHGMC) on August 10, 2022.

The groundbreaking ceremony of the BSL-SNRL was held at San Pedro, Cabusao, Camarines Sur to expand its location and healthcare capacity. The BSL-SNRL will serve as an infectious and public health laboratory with complete testing and surveillance services.  Regional Director Dr. Ernie V. Vera and Assistant Regional Director Dr. Ferchito L. Avelino, with Assistant Secretary Nestor F. Santiago and BRGHGMC Medical Center Chief Edgardo R. Sarmiento led the groundbreaking ceremony.

RD Vera explained the process in establishing and expanding the BSL-SNRL with the support of BRGHGMC. “Nakipag-coordinate po kami with Dr. Sarmiento (of BRGHGMC) on the provision of land for the BSL-SNRL. Isa ito sa mga requirements na magkaroon ng identified land kung saan itatayo ang laboratory.”

ARD Avelino expressed his gratitude for all who were involved in the ceremony. “I thank the DOH family for participating in this momentous event. Let this day be the mark of a start of making a dream a reality.”

Asec. Santiago stressed the importance of BSL-SNRL as a public health laboratory. “This groundbreaking is the initiative of the DOH Bicol CHD and BRGHGMC. Pagdating sa disasters and emergencies, in the Bicol Region, you name it we have it. Having a public health laboratory like BSL-SNRL is important as this will serve as a laboratory response for emerging and reemerging diseases and natural disasters.”

Medical Center Chief of BRGHGMC Dr. Sarmiento looked into the future of BSL-SNRL.  “This is one of the core projects of DOH to CHD Bicol. This groundbreaking site will be a permanent location for BSL-SNRL. In this historical event, we hope to see BSL-SNRL last for more than several years.”

Meanwhile, RD Vera, ARD Avelino, Asec. Santiago, and Dr. Sarmiento also led the inauguration of BRGHGMC facilities. Facilities include the telemedicine unit with equipped ancillary service, enhanced negative pressure room to manage both COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, enhanced blood station, library, and department offices.

The DOH Bicol CHD is strengthening its development plans for the expansion of BSL-SNRL as well as its collaborations with BRGHGMC. In the meantime, the public may continue to avail the services of BSL-SNRL located inside the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital compound, Daraga, Albay.
