Davao CityThe Senate has approved on second reading, a bill change the name of Compostela Valley to Davao de Oro yesterday, Governor Jayvee Tyron Uy said in a statement. Uy said he was elated with the passage of the bill on second reading and expected that by the end of the year, it will be approved into law.

“We sincerely thank the sponsor of the bill, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and Sonny Angara, who referred the bill to the plenary” he said.

The Compostela Valley Governor said the change of name was primarily motivated by their desire to be associated with the Davao Region.

“While our province, by virtue of geographical division, is part of the Davao Region, we are the only province with no “Davao” word on its name” he said.

Governor Uy said this has cause confusion as to where Compostela Valley is located since there are people would always associated the ComVal with Cagayan Valley in Luzon, or Compostela town in Cebu.

“If ever Davao de Oro will be fully realized, we expect improved name recognition paving way for influx of investments and many other’s” he said.

The Governor said now, that the approval of the bill is certain of passage in congress, they will soon start working on a plebiscite that would seek the locals’ approval of the change in name.
