Classes opened smoothly in Western Visayas, although there were reports of late enrollees, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

Dr. Victor de Gracia, officer-in-charge at the office of the DepEd Assistant Regional Director, said in an interview yesterday that their field offices have not reported any problems at the start of classes.

He cited that supervisors both in the regional and division offices were spread in various areas of the region to monitor the school opening.

“I am very happy that they have not encountered problems at the start of classes,” he said.

De Gracia attributed the smooth class opening to the various preparations undertaken by the schools, such as the Brigada Eskwela school clean-up last week.

They also established information desks through Oplan Balik Eskwela that responded to queries of students and parents.

DepEd Western Visayas expected some 2,058,138 pupils and students to troop to various public schools in the region starting on June 3.

De Gracia said majority of the students attended their classes yesterday.

Some private schools also decided to start classes simultaneously with the opening of public schools.

De Gracia, however, said that despite the announcement for students to enroll early, there are still students who opted to be late.

“We will accommodate them. We are giving them one month. Once we finalize our enrollment after one month, that would be the end of our enrollment,” he said.* (Perla Lena, PNA via NDB)
