Baguio gears for earthquake drill

The 1st Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill dubbed “Bida ang Handa” will happen on Feb. 21, 2p.m. with Baguio City as the pilot area in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Local Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer III Yolanda Munar said the drill will be conducted at the Pacdal area with the involvement of the government offices, schools and the community but other barangays are also encouraged to participate in the activity.

The drill, a continuing activity of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, will now have an expanded areas.of assessment this year: Baguio City Emergency Operations Center; Baguio City Incident Management Team, Emergency Telecommunications Cluster, Public Information Management,  Education Cluster, Evacuation Procedure, SRR Search Techniques and Markings, Fire Suppression, SRR Scene Size-Up and Initial Actions, SRR Victim Evaluation, Release from Entrapment, Packaging and Movement, Health Cluster and Law and Order.

The scenario to be used will be the occurrence of an intensity 7.2 earthquake with ten injured, two missing persons and a fire incident.

It can be recalled that on July 16, 1990, a magnitude-7.8 earthquake hit Northern and Central Luzon. Among the hardest hit areas were the cities of Baguio, Cabanatuan in Nueva Ecija, and Dagupan in Pangasinan
