Bacolod City – The Negros Bacolod Transport Coalition is requesting the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Transportation to conduct a dialog to tackle the alarming and controversial status of the transport industry in the city.

Diego Malacad, United Drivers Operators Center (UNDOC) secretary general said, said that about 100 percent of public utility jeepneys (PUJs) in Bacolod have no registration because of the refusal of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to accept their documents.

Malacad said this will put the lives of the public at risk. It is only in Bacolod where their registration won’t be accepted to give way to the modernization program.

They are willing to pay for the registration and comply with all the requirements. But according to the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB), they are still registered up to March 2023, he said.

Malacad said that out of 7,400 PUJs in Bacolod only about 3,887 are operating. If the 3,887 are phased out, these will be replaced by 1,096 modern jeepneys.

So they have sought the help of SP to call the attention and to invite the LTFRB to explain why they won’t allow PUJs in Bacolod to renew their registration, he added. (Chrysee Semillano via The Visayan Daily Star, photo courtesy of Sunstar)
